Lewes Women's 2nd XV (12) - Cannock Lionesses (24)

Lewes Women's 2nd XV travelled to Derby on Sunday where they faced Cannock Lionesses in the RFU Junior National Cup final. The goal they had set out to achieve at the start of the season was to reach the final and this they achieved. They put in a strong performance against a well-drilled and tight-knit team. After losing the first 12 points to Lewes, Cannock's defense became impenetrable and they began to score solid tries. Lewes were not quite able to break through but kept up the attack to the end, despite losing a number of players to injury and one yellow card for a high tackle.

Fantastic performance from forward of the match Alice Williams, new to rugby only a few months ago and one of our try scorers. And back of the match went to Sarah "Maths" McCarthy for her excellent boot and command at number 10. A great games too from Caro Sugranes who score the second try.

For Lewes, the result did not reflect the passion and desire to win. They played for each other and kept their heads up to the end. The ladies came away with silver medals and that achievement should not be downplayed given that the team is only in its second season ever.

A huge thanks to all those who have given their time over the season to develop the ladies section into what it has become. Namely, 2s coach Tom "Kipps" Golden who only just started coaching this season but has been wonderful, and first team coaches Owen Jones and Rob Williams for helping the vision come to life. Also thanks to supporters and club committee members who travelled all the way to Derby.

On to next season where they will have another go!
