RECORD SCORE AT THE STANLEY TURNER GROUND!

As might be expected from a match between promotion-chasing Lewes and bottom-placed Crowborough, this was a very one-sided affair straight from the kick-off. What the large festive home crowd were not expecting, however, was the largest winning margin ever seen at the Stanley Turner Ground as the hosts ran in a total of 21 tries and 13 conversions.
Although kicking-off into a strong headwind, it took Lewes only 6 minutes to score their first try after winning loose ball on half-way, enabling fleet-footed second-rower Jack Nayler to open his side's account with a fine try after sprinting fully 40 metres to touch down under the posts. Full-back Dan Wade slotted over the easy conversion to put the first points on the board at 7 - 0. From this point on, Lewes scored at will as they completely dominated all phases of the game, as a result bringing their impressive set of young backs into play at every opportunity.
Nayler added another 3 tries in the opening half, with outside-half Billy Shiell, flanker (and Man of the Match) Nathan Lowen, and influential centre Will Tobin picking up 2 apiece. Conversions followed from Wade (2), winger Charlie Hobden (2) and centre Nick Sharp - but in between Crowborough scored their sole consolation, unconverted try from their full-back after a defensive error by Lewes near their line. Nevertheless, the home side went in at the break at the break with a bonus-point , unassailable lead 62 - 5.
Unlike last week's game, Lewes continued to pile on the pressure in the second half against spirited but out-classed opponents, further tries coming via Mike Stubbs (3), James Halpin (2), Will Feltham (2), and 1 try each from Shiel, Lowen, Jones and Sharp, with Sharp (6) and Hobden adding the extras to make this an incredibly comprehensive victory by 131 - 5 which sees Lewes firmly anchored at second-place in the League table.
Player/Coach Stubbs commented at the end of the match: "After last week, I asked the boys to be clinical today, and they couldn't have responded better. The handling, off-loading and support play was fantastic".
Prior to the start of the game, the Club held its Annual Xmas Lunch, during which a large collection was made for the Club's Charity of the day, the Rocking Horse Appeal (proceeds to Brighton's Childrens Hospital). After the match, the Lewes players -all dressed in Father Christmas outfits - tucked into an Xmas dinner of their own before proceeding into town to take advantage of the seasonal spirits!
Lewes: Williams, Warren, Hill, Creed, Nayler (Capt.), Lowen, Hatch, Stubbs, Jones, Shiell, Hobden, Halpin, Tobin, Feltham, Wade. (Reps., all used: Bowry, Dean, Sharp)
On Saturday, Lewes 1st's visit third-placed Hellingly for what is expected to be a much tougher test to complete the first half of the season's fixtures, while the 2nd's are at home against Hellingly 2nd's, both games kicking-off at 2.00pm.
