WALK-OVER WIN SEE LEWES MOVE FURTHER UP LEAGUE TABLE

Only ninety minutes before the scheduled kick-off time, Hellingly informed Lewes they were unable to send a 1st XV squad to the Stanley Turner Ground. The resultant walk-over handed Lewes a valuable five points which sees them move further up the League table, and also - as the match was a "double header" - sees them progress to the next round of the Bob Rogers Cup.
The large crowd (including several of Lewes's sponsors who had attended the pre-match lunch) which had turned up to watch what would have been a key local derby turned their attentions to the other home match: Lewes 2nd's - lying in third place in their League table - and Crowborough 2nds, lying second. As befits a match between two competitive teams, this was an absorbing encounter, with Crowborough snatching a last-minute victory by
13 - 17, leaving a disappointed Lewes team with a consolation losing bonus point.
With the sides evenly-matched, it was no surprise it took 18 minutes to put the first points on the scoreboard, the visitors' heavy pack of forwards driving towards the Lewes try line for flanker Ollie Juke to plunge over for an unconverted try to make it 0 - 5 to Crowborough. But Lewes hit back 10 minutes later, winning ball inside Crowborough's 22 metre area, for replacement prop-forward Mo Bacha to score his side's first, but unconverted, try to even matters up at 5 - 5. However, 6 minutes from half-time, Crowborough pulled ahead once more at 5 - 12 with a try from inside-centre Alan Wates, scrum-half James Hart adding the extras.
The second half was equally tight, Lewes pulling back to 8 - 12 with a penalty after 46 minutes from outside-half Joe Terry, and then taking the lead for the first time in the match on the hour, winning the ball on the half-way line and feeding it to Terry who ran fully 45 metres for an unconverted try in the left corner to make it 13 - 12.
With the clock ticking down to full-time, the final session was evenly-matched, but then, with seconds remaining, Lewes conceded a series of penalties inside their own half which enabled Crowborough to advance towards the try-line, ending with Waters scoring his second, unconverted try to snatch victory by 13 - 17.
On Saturday, Lewes 1st's travel to Beccahamians (k.o. 2.30pm) for a crucial League match, while the 2nd's entertain Rye at the Stanley Turner Ground, also at 2.30pm.
