TOUGH MATCH FOR INJURY-HIT LEWES

With 17 of their 1st XV squad missing due to injuries or unavailability, an away match against Croydon-based Beccehamians was a tough test for Lewes, and so it proved as they crashed to their heaviest defeat of the season so far with a convincing 32 - 3 win for the hosts. An indication of Bec's overall strength was the fact that they denied Lewes a try for the first time in all their fixtures to date.
Having to call-up 4 players from the 2nd's, it was always going to take some time for Lewes to settle down and it was no surprise when Bec's opened the scoring after only 2 minutes as the visitors conceded a penalty for offside which inside-centre Jordan Suter kicked over to make it 3 - 0.
Lewes then settled down, holding out their opponents until the 18th.minute when, following increased Bec's pressure, they worked an overlap out left for inside-centre Pat Raffell to go over in the corner for an unconverted try, 8 -0. But 7 minutes later Lewes scored what turned out to be their only points of the match when outside-half Dan Billing kicked over a penalty to get Lewes within bonus-point range at 8 - 3. On the half hour a couple of serious injuries to Lewes players disrupted play for several minutes; firstly, to influential No. 10, Joe Terry, then to forward Haydn Barber, but to the visitor's credit, heroic defensive play prevented any further scores until the half-time whistle.
The second half belonged to Beccehamians, as their powerful forwards continued to supply plenty of ball to their well-organised backs, who attacked the Lewes line at every opportunity. On 45 minutes Raffell scored his second, unconverted, try, to pull away at
13 - 3 and on the hour, to add to Lewes's misery, their hooker Tom Hatch was yellow-carded for obstruction. Becs took full advantage of the extra man, and took full control of the match, seeing their full-back Paul Borlits score a try left of the posts converted by Raffell, to stretch the lead to 20 - 3. The home side then scored their fourth bonus-point try after by replacement Ade Ashworth, converted by Raffell, to go further ahead at 27 - 3. In the dying seconds, Raffell burst through Lewes's despairing defence for his hat-trick, the conversion going wide, to see his side deserved winners by 32 - 3.
A disappointing result for Lewes, who will be grateful that the coming Saturday is a rest day, hopefully enabling their injured players to recover in time for their next challenge: a home game against Park House at the Stanley Turner Ground on 17th.November, k.o. 2.30pm.
Lewes 2nd XV secured a home walk-over win, as their opponents, Rye, were unable to raise a team.
