Set-back in first league game of the season

After a bright start by Lewes, it was Bromley who opened the scoring after seven minutes with their first attack into the visitors' half, their left-winger Iain Gould bursting through for a try near the posts which centre Steve Pillow converted to put the first points on the board, 7-0. But Lewes attacked straight from the re-start, forcing the hosts to concede a penalty for offside some 15 metres out which fly-half Jon Pitts kicked over to make it 7-3.

On 17 minutes, Lewes won good ruck ball out right, before passing the ball along the backline for left-winger Tom Petty to go over in the corner for an unconverted try to take the lead at 7-8. Two minutes later Bromley hit back with a drive upfield, rounded off by Gould scoring his second try, Pillow's conversion seeing the hosts re-take the advantage at 14-8. The see-saw first half came to a close with Lewes taking the lead once more at 14-15, a period of pressure paying off when No 8 Tom Hatch scored from a forwards' drive, Pitts adding the extras.

At this stage, the Lewes supporters thought this was going to be close game, but the second half belonged to Bromley as Lewes' composure was shattered by a series of injuries, the inevitable changes upsetting their rhythm, enabling the Kent side to dominate possession and territory as a result. This saw them score four further tries without reply from flanker Nathan Wilson; centre Sean Becket; sub Freddy Bender; and Pillow, who added another four conversions to see his side run out bonus-point winners by 42-15.

Not the result Lewes were expecting as they opened their League campaign but, to their credit, they never gave up the chase and, in fact, finished the match the stronger by restricting Bromley to within their own 22 metre zone but unable to add any more points.
Lewes: Sayers, Warren, Raynor, Lowen, M Taylor, Blunt, Furse, Hatch, G Taylor, Pitts, Petty, Halpin (Capt), Feltham, Roberts, Wade (Reps, all used: Irvine, Pryer, Shiell).

Lewes will have to bounce back for their first home League game on Saturday when they entertain Old Dunstonians, k.o. 3.00pm at the Stanley Turner Ground.

It was happier news for Lewes 2nd's, who scored 8 tries in their convincing 48 - 17 home win against Crawley 3rd's.
