Bonus-point win after best performance of season so far

The hard work we've put in showed today. The front row played fantastically, with Gus, Shane and Billy running the game and keeping the tempo high. A few things to sharpen up on for Ashford next week.

This was the game which saw Lewes return to the flair and dominance they showed last season, overwhelming their opponents with their best performance of the season so far. This success was due in no large part to the return of several players - including influential centre Will Tobin, playing his first game after suspension - which meant that Lewes could put out almost their strongest squad. However, the victory was muted by the loss through a late injury of full-back Dan Wade, and of stalwart second-row Jack Nayler, playing his last game for the Club before taking up a staffing appointment with Celtic Football Club in Scotland.

On a fine, sunny day, it was the visitors who opened the scoring after Lewes fumbled the ball at the kick-off, leading to immediate pressure inside their own half which resulted in Dunstonians being awarded a penalty, Lewes not releasing the ball, kicked over by their No 8. to make it 0-3.

But Lewes hit back straight from the re-start with a fine, flowing move upfield, the ball passing between forwards and backs, before Wade touched down on the left for his side's first, but unconverted, try to take the lead at 5-3.This extended to 10-3 a few minutes later with a similar move, this time down the right, ending with right-winger Abe Bredin scoring Lewes' second, but again unconverted, try in the corner. With the Lewes pack now on the ascendant, it took only until the thirteenth minute for the lead to increase to 15-3, outside-half Shane Costigan scoring, but once more Wade was unable to add the extras.

Just after the half-hour, and with Lewes now showing the form of last year's successful campaign, the hosts scored their fourth, bonus-point try after the forwards had driven the opposition back to near their own line, enabling second-row Nat Lowen to score near the posts, with Wade this time slotting over the conversion - to somewhat ironic cheers from the large crowd - to extend the advantage to 22-3. Two minutes from the half-time break, Lewes rounded off a highly successful first half with their fifth try from Player-Coach Mike Stubbs, following a fine break in midfield by outside-centre Billy Shiell, Wade kicking over the conversion to make it 29-3. But it was the visitors who finished the half with the last score, with a well-worked, unconverted try from their full-back to reduce the deficit to 29-8.

The second-half saw Lewes continue to dominate all phases, their speed and slick handling in attack matched by their disciplined and strong defence. This combination enabled them to prevent Dunstonians from scoring again, and to add further tries of their own from Tobin, Bredin (his second) and - just before the final whistle - a great try from scrum-half Gus Taylor, with Wade kicking two conversions, to see Lewes end with a fine 48-8 win which propels them up towards the top end of the League table.

Stubbs commented after the match: "The hard work we've put in showed today. The front row played fantastically, with Gus, Shane and Billy running the game and keeping the tempo high. A few things to sharpen up on for Ashford next week."
