Final score 7-7

Lewes Ladies travelled to Medway for the second time this season having previously beaten the Kent side 26-12 in the cup competition at the beginning of October. Unfortunately this time the ladies were lucky to come away with a draw after a sleepy first half.

Lewes won the toss and played away from the low winter sun for the first half - optimistic that they would go into half time with a comfortable score buffer. However Medway came out with more physicality and drive than the previous match and Lewes were soon on the back foot. Despite dominating every scrum the Lewes forwards struggled to retain possession and get clean ball for the backs. A number of ventures into the opposition 22 went without getting a score on the board and with minutes left in the half Medway kicked their way up the pitch and broke through the Lewes defence to score their first and only try. The extra 2 points were added by their fly-half and Lewes went into half time a score down.

The beginning of the second half looked more familiar but the ladies still lacked the belief that they could claw something back from this game. The opposition were tiring and, being the fitter team, Lewes knew that they had to capitalise on this. Medway used every opportunity to slow the ball down and pause the clock as they struggled to keep up.

The tired Medway side started to make mistakes and by the middle of the second half they were awarded a yellow card for a high tackle, giving Lewes the overlap. Unfortunately Lewes were unable to make the most of the yellow card but were soon given another chance when the opposition fly half was sent to the bin for another high tackle. A particularly long break in play followed due to a Medway injury but Lewes coach Owen Jones used the time to give some stern words and Lewes' Ladies finally woke up and came out fighting, finding themselves once again within steps of the try line. Winger Faye Kirby spotted a gap and cut back in field to score near the posts, giving Sam Monaghan the job of adding the 2 points to bring the teams level.

With 10 minutes left to play and Medway back up to a full 15 the last plays of the game were fraught, neither team wanting to end on an equal score line. However neither managed to break their opposition's defence and the final whistle blew with 7 points a side.

Lewes ladies continue their league campaign against local rivals Worthing ladies this Sunday at Worthing RFC where they hope to go into the Christmas break with a comfortable win.
