Lewes Under 13s’ opponents were recent adversaries Burgess Hill who had certain players back from the injury list to bolster their team the game so that it would not be as one-sided as the previous encounter.

Burgess Hill started with pace and flair scoring in virtually the first minute of the game with a blinding run from their winger. Lewes appeared to be still in warm-up mode and the half-hearted tackling somewhat gifted him the try.

However Lewes pulled themselves up by their bootlaces and hit back quickly with a try of their own off a powerful run by Henry Mitchell, swiftly followed by another by captain Charlie Hawes.

The tries were now coming thick and fast. Ethan Wilson put in a strong straight run beloved of coaches to score Lewes’ third. Showing that speed was not the sole preserve of Burgess Hill, Lewes' own winger, Jack Palmer, scorched over for their fourth try on the 15 minute mark.

This end-to-end stuff continued with Burgess Hill hitting back with a try their own, from their familiar number 5, but this was followed by a cheeky score off the back of a breakdown on their 5 m line by the Lewes scrum-half Ben Webb with one of his signature jinking runs.

There was still fight left in Burgess Hill who scored again right on the half-time whistle to leave the score 25-15 in Lewes’ favour, which was a fair reflection of the run of play.

The second half looked like it was going to be as fast and hectic as the first with a nicely-worked try by Burgess Hill within the first minute. However it was apparent that both sides had over-indulged over the Christmas break and the pace became a little less frantic with the forwards’ speed to the breakdown becoming distinctly more pedestrian as time progressed.

However Ethan Wilson made another powerful run through the centre to score Lewes' sixth try but Burgess Hill were still not giving up and when in possession invariably broke the gain line and required some last minute defence by Lewes full-back Pierre Burrows.

However a sustained period of pressure on the Burgess Hill line and some great work at the breakdown saw Finn Keegan come up with a well-deserved try and to close the day in the dying seconds Lewes's other winger Alistair Orwin scored the final points of the game.

The closing score was a 40-20 victory for Lewes, which was testament to a good all-round performance from everyone in the squad.
