Injury hit U15s dig deep to beat Heathfield

Lewes 26 Heathfield 14

Despite the sunny spring weather the odds seemed stacked against the U15s on Sunday morning. Nearly a third of the Lewes squad were absent through injury and the visitors had beaten them earlier in the season. To add insult to injury (or perhaps the other way round) talismanic Lewes prop Luke Roberts limped off in the first few minutes and played no further part in the contest.

The first half was scrappy and error strewn. Lewes were dominant but could not seem to turn pressure into points against a determined Heathfield defence. Despite being camped out in the visitors 22 a plethora of unforced errors and unnecessary infringements prevented the home side opening their account. Eventually fly half Geordie Gwynn collected his own chip to cross the whitewash a few minutes before the break. But in the last play of the half the visitors struck back to equal the score at 7 apiece.

After the interval the home side were much improved. They put numbers in the ruck, patiently went through the phases and started to mix the points of attack. Their efforts were soon rewarded when second row Eddie Wrench stormed over to score. Alex Brydon, Wrench’s usual second row partner but forced through circumstance to play on the wing, then capped another strong performance by flying over from outside the 22.

With the score at 21 – 7 the game seemed to be slipping from Heathfield’s grasp. But the visitor’s backs always looked dangerous in possession and a well worked counter attack brought them back to within seven points. Lewes once again had to dig deep. Defending a line out in their own 22 the home side won possession, worked their way up field and Gwynn scored a second try to put the result beyond doubt.

Tries: Geordie Gwynn (2) Eddie Wrench, Alex Brydon
Conversions: Geordie Gwynn (3)
