Three-way friendly format against Chichester and Sutton & epsom

The U15s (above) took part in a three-way festival at Chichester with Sutton and Epsom. The first game against Sutton and Epsom was a highly competitive affair with strong aggressive running from both sides combined with fierce competition at the breakdown. The Lewes pack depleted of three normal stalwarts stepped up and secured the ball at the breakdown and competed for opposition ball to boot. Jordan Potter's first try was from a well-taken ball at the lineout by Freddie initially driven on then popped by reinvigorated raging bull Ed King who drove to within five metres of the try line before being grounded. Good quick recycling then allowed Marcus to launch the second wave of forwards and Jordan to power his way over the line.

The second try came from a penalty just outside Lewes' 22. Marcus popped to Jordan who ran it up, quick recycling and an offload to Ed who them ran it up to halfway line before offloading well to Marcus who then released George to head for the corner flag. Sutton managed to bring George down but ended up knocking the ball into touch. Freddie secured good ball at the lineout once more, Marcus sniped done the side of the unguarded resulting ruck/maul, King had another trundle before Nick finished off with a strong run down the blind side scoring in the corner.

The next two games were draws, firstly against Chichester and then the second outing against Sutton being a draw after initially being a try down before once more King powered his way over the line for the equaliser.

In the last game Lewes cut loose with an impressive display of fast running lines, quality handling and offloading leading to tries a plenty from both forwards and backs.

Over the afternoon Sutton and Epson got stronger and better organised and confident, Chichester in contrast once under pressure turned into each other and venting frustrating on their team mates.

Head Coach Ben Green concluded that "whilst the overall results are very welcome, the real delight from the day was the spirit, teamwork, commitment and focus of the team well lead by Marcus as Captain and Giles in the pack, good line out jumping from Freddie and Bailey, Luca settling into Number 10 shirt, Joe a valuable stint at full-back, nice link work from Matt, great rucking from all the forwards especially the back row of Giles, Ciaran and Freddie."

The aggregate scores from the five minute quarters were Lewes 15-Sutton & Epsom 5; Lewes 35-Chichester 5

Meanwhile, on the same day, Ben Bishop represented the club for Sussex XV and they had a tough day against very strong opposition, unfortunately losing against Surrey (0-12) and Berkshire (0-17). Both counties have strong public schools and links to pro clubs with Quins and London Irish respectively. Raff Green and Ben Goode played for the second XV. Both boys played very well with a win (10-5) against Surrey A and a draw (5-5) against Berkshire A. Ben ran through to score in each game.
