Third win on the bounce for Lewes Colts

So game three of this truncated season was against Heathfield & Waldron at theirs. We last played them in March 2020 in the final game before this madness set in and we scrapped home 12-10 in a tight match.

We played on their first’s pitch which was in great nick and it suited the fast and wide game we like to play, in near perfect conditions (apart from the odd rain squall). We brought a mahoosive squad of 29 with rolling subs which did make the game a bit chaotic at times as we tried to ensure that everyone got some decent game time.

We started strongly with some bullocking runs from our forwards but it was Heathfield that opened the scoring with a penalty. This didn’t last long as our confidence grew and the quicker ball provided by the forwards was well utilised by the backs and we had soon opened up a 20-3 lead with 3 fine tries. We started to find more time on the ball and put into practice parts of what we have been working on in training. Some of the handling and inter-linking support play was top draw and we opened up our lead to 27-3.

The myriad of substitution and the mounting penalty count gave Heathfield the chance to close the gap to 27-17 as they came back strongly despite the score line. We then traded a couple of further tries each, one in particular a beautiful chip & chase from our fly half Geordie. We finished the victors 39-27 with 6 tries from John, Geordie (2), Brad, Raff & Jack.

The final score didn’t really do us justice and if it wasn’t for having 4 tries disallowed and the staggering penalty count against us the margin would have been much wider, but the less said about that the better.

The unbeaten colts chariot rolls in to Uckfield this Sunday with a 1.00pm kick off and a 12.00 meet, looking to make it 4 wins out of 4 for the season.
