Uckfield Colts 0 Lewes Colts 55

We travelled the short distance up the A26 to a warm welcome from our local rivals Uckfield. This week we had an even larger squad than last with 29 fit and able young men all ready to get stuck in.

Everyone played at least half a game and it just goes to show the strength in depth of the squad that there is no dip in performance or ability when we make wholesale substitutions. At one stage we made 14 changes in one go and the tries kept on coming at exactly the same rate as before.

Just after kick off the heavens opened and although we created some great early opportunities, the greasy ball forced a few handling errors when a try was on the cards.

As the rain eased and the sun appeared, our handling improved and Ben Goode opened our account with a fine try. The forwards began to find space for themselves and with our pod system working well we bashed some impressive holes in the Uckfield defence before unleashing the backs who have pace to burn and no shortage of talent.

The tries started to come regularly now, one in particular a thing of beauty passing through 7 or 8 pairs of hands before being finished off by Geordie for one of his four tries.

To Uckfield's credit they really stuck to their task, creating several opportunities of their own but our defence was solid and it was great to see, from a coach's perspective, that the team were just as delighted with the no tries conceded as they were with the 9 that we scored.

Particular mention should go to our scrum-halves Dante who had a fine game and Henry who had a very accomplished debut in the number nine shirt.

There was a real buzz about the whole team today. The two age groups have combined really well in a short period of time and if we had played a whole season they would have achieved great things together.

Next Sunday we head to Edenbridge for the final game of the season to see if we can go unbeaten and make it 5 wins from 5.

Tries: Ben Goode, Geordie 4, Dylan, Raff, Nick & Ed
