So the final game of this somewhat bizarre season was away to Edenbridge Colts on a grey, blustery day, more akin to February conditions than the end of May. We had a few missing due to injury, end of exam hangovers, work/family commitments and other poor excuses but our strength in depth meant we still fielded a quality squad of 23.
We started cautiously with a penalty but soon had the try count underway with fine tries from Ben G & Jack and a good old fashioned trundle from Ed. Edenbridge struggled to live with our pace and strength and Jack then Finlay added further impressive tries to make it 30-0 at the break.
After half time the rains came and it seems we are not so good in the wet. Edenbridge camped down in our 22 and although we defended stoutly, eventually they found their way over the whitewash to make it 30-7. Thankfully the rain quickly dried up and we got back into our rhythm with 3 further tries from Ben B, Raff & Cam, all out of the top draw. The ref sensibly blew up a few minutes early as one of the Edenbridge players took a nasty knock to the head.
The final score was 47-7 making it 5 convincing wins out of 5 for the season. It has been a real shame that Covid has robbed us of a full season, as I’m sure this talented bunch would have been challenging for county honours otherwise.
