SAD NEWS FOR THE CLUB

It is with great sadness that Lewes have just been informed by his daughter, Kate, that Tony Burton passed away last Friday.

Tony was a member of Lewes' record-breaking team of the 1970's and '80's - then the top Club in Sussex - playing at open-side flanker. According to his then Coach, Terry Powell, Tony was one of the best players in his position that the Club - and even the County - had seen. His strength in the tackle and uncompromising fierce defence made him an opponent to fear. In addition, his speed and courage enabled him to go where few other flankers would venture!

For those who remember Tony when he went on one of the Club's tour to Lewes's twin-Town, Blois will no doubt recall the famous cricket match he organised against the French, utilising a broom -handle as the bat and pieces of baguette for the ball!

Although not in good health for the past few years of his life, Tony nevertheless came to watch his beloved Lewes, often accompanied by fellow-players from his glorious era.

Tony will be missed, both as a player and a person, and the Club's sympathies go out to his family.
