Lewes women’s 2s visited Heathfield & Waldron on Sunday for a league fixture against what they knew was going to be a tough and talented side. The hosts displayed an impressive show of support from their club members on the side-lines, and a confident performance from H&W did not disappoint.
The first half saw Lewes dominate in possession but were forced into easy mistakes which H&W capitalised on repeatedly. Neither team were quite able to take advantage of the numerous penalty opportunities until Lewes pushed over the line just before half time.
With discipline and tenacity, Lewes began to make better use of their opportunities and wore down the strong defence. H&W fought hard and were relentless in their tackling, often putting Lewes on the back foot and forcing errors. H&W hit back and stepped up with an aggressive attack. Some inexperience on both sides led to some sloppy high tackling, resulting in a yellow card for the visiting side and a penalty try for the hosts. Lewes found its rhythm in the last quarter with some exceptional teamwork and composure to pull off a 29-7 win.
Impressive performances from two sides with a mix of experience, in what promises to be a very interesting league.
