In a much needed distraction from all the current worries it was good to witness a fine game of rugby between two well matched sides made even better as Lewes sneaked home the winners by 2 points.
Heathfield were a well drilled side with some useful forwards who were fast and strong at the breakdown and in the tight and had a simple and effective strategy based on one out runners. For the first time this season Lewes had a match day squad of 21 with no-one having to play out of position, and we soon needed our finishers as Jordan, after a powerful start, took a nasty knock and dislocated his shoulder.
Heathfield started strongly pinning Lewes down deep in our own 22 and although we defended resolutely eventually the pressure told and Heathfield scored from close range to make it 5-0. We slowly began to get a foothold in the game and just before half-time Ollie scored a superb solo effort having returned a kick from well inside our own half to tie the score 5-5.
We were more dominant in the second half, demonstrating great heart and soon scored a try off a fine backs move finished well by Nick and converted by Oscar to make it 12-5. The game then ebbed and flowed with both sides playing well and with about 10 minutes to go Heathfield scored to make it 12-10 to us.
The game then got a bit feisty as both sides pressed for the win in the closing minutes and Lewes hung on bravely in take the honours.
This was our last league game of the season and should see us finish 3rd in the league. I think I speak for all the Colts coaches in saying it has been a pleasure to be involved with this group of fine young men who have come together to create a great team spirit and played some top notch rugby too.
