After a narrow loss in their first league game last week away to Crowborough, Lewes Colts welcomed Hastings & Bexhill to the STG.
The game saw both teams with depleted numbers before starting with two drop outs on the morning that wasn’t ideal for Hastings & Bexhill
The game started with a flourish with Lewes going through the gears quickly scoring within the first 5 mins. This continued with Lewes putting a lot of pressure on the Hastings & Bexhill defence.
Hastings & Bexhill proved they were not push overs with two tries of their own, one of which was a beautiful cross field kick into the arms of a waiting winger to score in the corner.
Unfortunately before the half finished a few injuries led to both teams going down to 12 each on the pitch and the score line at 36 -12 at the end of the half.
Starting the second half Lewes really put on a show, putting into practice the work they have done at training and working in a close knit team to get over the gain-line.
Line breaks, tip passes, strike moves and well executed set plays gave Lewes platform after platform to work from leading to them moving away scoreline wise.
However Hastings & Bexhill showed their tenacity, capitalising on any mistake made by Lewes. Discipline in the final quarter was something Lewes struggled with giving Hastings & Bexhill a foothold which they used to score two further tries.
After a reorganisation, Lewes regained the upper hand and finished the game in good form.
The scoreline finished with Lewes 67 - 26 to the better, putting them in good stead for next week’s away fixture to Brighton.
