Sunday 26th April saw the Lewes RFC U16 Lionesses travel to Hove RFC for the Sussex RFU U16s Cup Finals Day.  Not only was there some silverware up for grabs, but a win could also see them confirmed as Sussex U16 Girls League Champions.

In the league, they were unbeaten and were playing a League and Plate double header v Worthing RFC U16s to close their season out.

Worthing started the season with 7 players at U16s, but were now fielding 13, which is a fantastic effort on their part.  Over the season they have worked with Horsham RFC to ensure their fixtures had enough players which is a credit to both clubs.

The build-up had been tense, there were plenty of nerves amongst the players, coaching team and parents, but any nerves amongst the players evaporated completely upon the referees’ whistle to start the match.  Worthing kicked off and a clean catch by Lewes saw them build a quick attack which paid dividends.  Lewes continued in this vein for most of the match.  Worthing worked tirelessly in defence and made Lewes fight for every metre.  Worthing countered when they could and their attack and flowing rugby was impressive to watch, but it was Lewes who had the pace in the backs and a pack of forwards who refused to take a backward step.

The pitch was dry and hard, so not a day for rucking and mauling.  Both teams suffered knocks from landing on the hard ground, but Lewes were relentless in their barracking runs, drawing the defence in and then moving the ball through the hands into space to score.

To their credit, Worthing did not give up, they are a credit to rugby’s “esprit de corps”, but it was the ability to bring on fresh legs regularly and their pace in attack that sealed the win for Lewes.

With tries for E Redshaw, L Parker-Phillipson, and an astounding four tries each for L Moffat and C Bains, with seven conversions also from C Bains, Lewes wrapped up the season with a convincing 64-0 win.

The Club are incredibly proud of this bunch of players, some of whom only started playing rugby this season.  They are a credit to the club, the county and the game.
